Every time I walk down a hotel corridor it reminds me of what a general manager taught me. Always walk along the walls instead of down the middle of the carpet. Hotel staff who work on the guest room floors, such as housekeeping, room service and baggage handling, are trained never to walk in the center of the corridor carpet; that’s for guests only.
The amount of foot traffic hotel hallways endure day in and day out is enough to wear out even the most luxurious rugs. The hotels I worked in included corridor traffic training to make sure all employees knew to stay out of the middle and always walk as close to the walls as possible. Now when you travel you’ll notice the carpet is not showing any more wear in the center of the hallway than on the sides. It’s amazing what goes on behind the magic curtain to maintain a hotel.
